Hotchley Hill has the benefit of a strong flat roof, which makes access easy, and relatively safe.  It also has the problem of a flat roof: a tendency to drain where it shouldn't, and not where it should.

Over the winter, we've been puzzling about two minor leaks in the roof:

One, where bright orange spots appear on the outside of the stove.  The stovepipe probably lets some rain in, but that should be on the outside!

Two, where the WC wall gets wet after but not during rain, or during light rain.

We think we've tracked these down to (1) water running off the chimney cap-stone, back under, and through a crack in the mortar, and (2) the same happening off the integrated concrete spout at the back of the building which drains the canopy.

Interestingly, both problems are due to the lack of a drip-edge.  They should now be fixed, but only time  & weather will tell.
