After last week's grand turnout, there were only a few of us this weekend - all young and without particular health concerns.
In the morning, we got the last of a recent equipment donation under cover, and waited for the rain to stop.
Once it had abated, the group headed down to H.H. with two tasks in mind: To work on getting all the locks fitted to the door at the top of the stairs, and to continue getting junk moved out of the locking room.
For the former, the first subtask was to cut a rectangular hole in the frame to accept the bolt from the mortice lock. Though the machinists among you are no-doubt horrified by the attached photo, I'm pretty happy with the result! There should be a brass striking block over the top of it, but that's another problem.
That done, I set about fitting those padlockable bolts to the outside of the door. Having brought good tools this time around, it did not take long. A few of you have commented on this unusual choice of lock for a door. While there are certainly stronger and prettier ways of adding locks, this has a good effort-benefit trade-off. If you have suggestions from working with steel doors of similar construction, do get in touch! They are not the easiest.
We ended the day with a rather frustrating announcement from the P.M. Between considerations of what is legal, what the company feels is appropriate, what is socially responsible, and personal circumstances, it is not at all clear if we'll be at work this coming Saturday. If not, the next report may be in December!
