After last week's long troughing run, we have now filled one of the gaps, running under the "release road neck". This joins two existing lengths of trough, one side of the station to the other. It's only short. The tricky part is matching the heights of the two other troughs at each end, while staying comfortably below the rails. There's a slight curve to it as a result, but that's not worth worrying about.
We had also hoped to get the last chamber, where the cables dive under the track, dug out. Looking at the ground condition we decided the hole would just collapse and be additional hazard to ankles, so settled for finding a better cover for it. (To be revisited) We also rounded-up a good deal of clutter that had accumulated on Platform 2. Rotten wood, muddy rags, and so-forth.
Moving on, we set up two concrete posts, which once held a traditional wooden location case. These used to be very common, but are sadly impractical for new installations. You can't easily fit "modern" "miniature" relays inside, they rot, and are vulnerable to vandals. However, this particular case does not need to hold relays. It's merely a big junction box, so that all the wires from everything in the headshunt area can combine into fewer cables, which will then fit down ducts to control equipment on platform 2.
The observant reader will see that the case now mounted on these posts is, in fact, a telecoms cabinet - like those found on by the roadside. We think this is a fair match for both practical and aesthetic requirements - though it might need a coat of dark grey paint.
